About The Event

Welcome to the Cabaret Laboratory, where we explore and expand our understanding and presentation of performance through a cabaret lens.

This spring we have three 6-week series available and a few specialty classes! All classes are held at Evergreen Spaces in the Birch Studio.

Please note the start time of your class! Showpass will give a generic start time and date based on the overall event - not the ticket purchased.

CLASSES:

Solo Sirens Beginner Series Sundays from 7:00 to 8:00PM May 14th to June 25, 2023 $150.00 This series will be focused on creating solo acts with the goal of performing on a main stage. Led by Bitch Sassidy, this class will explore costuming, choreography, story telling, and stage presence. By the end of the series, each student will be given the opportunity to perform their solo at a Cabaret Calgary showcase. This class is for new burlesque performers who are creating their first solos.

Solo Sirens Advanced Series Sundays from 8:00 to 9:00PM May 14th to June 25, 2023 $150.00 This series will be focused on creating solo acts with the goal of performing on a main stage. Led by Bitch Sassidy, this class will explore costuming, choreography, story telling, and stage presence. By the end of the series, each student will be given the opportunity to perform their solo at a Cabaret Calgary showcase. This class is recommended for burlesque artists who have been performing for over a year and would like to workshop solos in a group setting.

Improv Burlesque Workshop Monday May 15 at 7:00pm to 9:00pm $50 This two hour workshop is dedicated to experimenting with improvisational movement in burlesque and drag. There are times when planned choreography doesn’t work! Karla Marx will be leading this workshop on how to improvise in the moment.

Giving Face! Monday May 29 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm $50.00 Ivy La Fleur will tackle stage presence facial expressions and how to communicate your intentions in this two-hour class. Elevate your stage performance through learning exercises and techniques that tap into the skills of facial choreography.

Advanced Burlesque Choreography Monday June 5 & 19 from 8:00pm to 9:00pm $75 Ashley Brodeur will be leading us through a two-part advanced choreography workshop. This is a movement based class for burlesque and drag artists to expand their choreo vocabulary, dance, and have fun. Ashley is the Director of Maven Movement, a member of the illFX Education Faculty as well as the School of Decidedly Jazz, and teaches in styles of jazz, contemporary, tap, ballet and hip hop.

Beginner Chair Choreography Monday June 12 from 7:00pm to 9:00pm $50.00 Join Bea Lissima in this beginner chair choreography class. Learn how to incorporate intentional chair movement in your burlesque vocabulary. This class will have a choreography component. Please bring a folding chair if you have one.

Act Development Monday June 26 from 7-9pm $25.00 Are you working on a new burlesque act? Want to apply to a festival and don’t know where to start? Bring your act and questions to the Act Development class to share, receive feedback from the board of Cabaret Calgary, and work on your piece with input from others. Limited space available to ensure each participant receives equitable time. An opportunity to showcase your act at the Student Showcase after this session and receive a recording will be offered. --- If at anytime a student feels unwell, we require them to not attend class. A student may return to class once they feel well. This is to protect the other attendees and the instructor from falling ill themselves.
